Playground

Our hotel had a cute little playground complete with a water fountain (not the drinkable kind) that Elijah just loved playing on. I think he got so spoiled with getting to play outside so much!

His favorite thing, of course, was this choo-choo train swing. He absolutely loves trains (and cars, tractors, buses, and pretty much any other vehicle) so he rode this little swing constantly.

Outdoors in Thailand

This year we were so excited to be able to spend the Chinese New Year in warm, sunny, land of smiles, Thailand. Though we did miss out of the massive amounts of fireworks, noise, and crowds, we did not lack in having lots of outdoor fun while we were there.

One of my all-time favorite things to do is to go on picnics. So we grabbed some sandwiches from Subway and headed out to a local park.

It was really peaceful and really beautiful. I think Elijah especially liked the fact that he could wade around in the water and throw lots of rocks!

A Real American Boy!

We sometimes think on the fact that because Elijah (and our other children) are going to be growing up in a foreign country that they are not going to be fully American. Of course they will have American citizenship and American blood, but they will never fully mesh with American culture as we know it. We have seen this many times in other children growing up here and find some of the oddities just plain funny. For instance, one little boy, when returning to the States for a visit, asked his mommy why water came out of a sink and shot up in the air for you to drink. Other children think it is strange that so many people do not speak Chinese when they land on American soil. After all, "most of the people in the world are Chinese", according to one little girl here. And there is always our favorite story of a pair of brothers whose parents took them to McDonald's as a treat. After ordering a happy meal for the boys, one of the boys said, "Mom I don't want a hamburger. I want 'mixian' (noodles)."

So we were actually a little relieved when we went to Burger King in Thailand, and Elijah fell in love with milkshakes. He just couldn't get enough of them. Ever since then, he constantly asks for a "mik-sake", and every once in a while we indulge him. Only time will tell about how much of American culture Elijah will actually identify with, but we know one thing is for sure- he is all-American when it comes to milkshakes!
